1963 Johnson Super Seahorse 40 HP (RDS-25D) top speed

I am trying to figure out if my motor is performing at its maximum potential. Can anyone tell me what I should expect for the top speed? It is mounted on a 14' aluminum Texas Maid Osprey that weighs around 300 pounds. I am only getting about 24 mph. It would probably be more accurate to ask what should top top end RPMs be. It would seem that that would take the vessel out of the equation. I think the prop is a 10 3/8-12

Check the ignition system over and try a spark test on it. That motor should move that boat pretty fast.

That speed is about the same as mine. I have a '62 Lark 40hp on my Feathercraft Ranger which is also a 14' aluminum boat and I get 40 kmh out of it which is 24mph.

I have a 1963 40 hp Johnson in a 10 .5 ft marlin mini boat two seater, it does around 50 mph...It's a go cart on the water..lol Jess

I would think you should be running closer to 35mph on that light boat.

my speedometer must be wrong then, I'll have to check that out..
