I have a 1963 75hp johnson electromatic. I was told that the clutch dogs went bad. I am trying to get to them myself so that I can fix it. I removed the lower unit. I then removed the prop, then removed the peice behind it that had 4 screws in it, then I removed a snap ring and have not been able to get the part that was underneath the ring out. The part has four screw holes in it and it will turn when I tap on it, but it will not come out.
Do I have to go in from the top?
Please help me get to the clutch dogs.

I think you're talking about the bearing housing. It comes out but you need a puller for it. The four screw holes are for the puller. You might be able to pull it with a harmonic balance puller and long bolts or allthread rods.

c/6

Hooty

Mltranch.... The 1963 Electramatic (electric shift) 75hp does not have a clutch dog. It has electromatic coils, hubs, and tension springs.

Regardless of whether you have a electric or manual shift lower unit, you will need to split the upper gearcase from the lower gearcase before you can dismantle it.

Re: 1963 johnson clutch dogs

Thanks for the info Joe. I am now having problems slitting the upper and lower gearcase from each other. There are two bolts that come up through the gearcases that have a nut on each one. I
removed the nuts from two bolts that stick up. I
can't get it apart and we don't see what is holding it. The shaft has some play in it and seems to be loose. But I can't get it out completely. It would be great if you could tell me how to take the upper and lower gearcases apart. But if you can't I appreciate the help you have already given me.

ML.... It is salt corrosion binding the two studs you speak of that is causing the problem. Use a hand help propane torch to heat up the areas where the studs go through the upper housing. Hopefully that will releast the grip enough so that you can use a brass punch to tap the studs down. I know what you're saying.... it's a real pain!

Caution.... As the unit seperates, depending on which type lower unit you have, you will need to disconnect the knife connections of the electric shift wires, or disconnect the shift linkage rod from the two (manual) lever connectors.

Thanks Joe. I will try that and get back with you hopefully with no other problems. I appreciate all that you have given me.

Joe, I have one more question. Our basic problem is under full load it kicks out of gear. We were told that it was bad clutch dogs by other people. If it does not have clutch dogs what would cause this?

ML.... If the unit does not have a electrical wire leading to it to enable shifting, it has a clutch shifter dog.

Otherwise (electrical), it could be a electromagnetic coil, or a scored hub and tension spring.

Re: 1963 johnson clutch dogs

Joe, we tried to tap the bolts out with out heating them up and it did not work. We then tried heating them and tapping and that did not work either. We loaded them up with WD40 and are letting it soak in as we speak. We have no clue what or where to go next. If you have anymore information that could help us, you would be a lifesaver but otherwise you have saved us many trips to a mechanic shop. Do you know of anywhere on the internet where we could find a mechanical diagram of this particular motor? Thanks.

ML.... If you're speaking of a diagram of the lower unit, I may be able to help you. You can contact me via ReevesJ32@aol.com but when you do, I will need the exact model number of that engine, year, make, hp and a definite explanation of which lower unit you have.... a manual or electric shift model.

Be sure to remind me of this conversation.
