UPDATE NOW ON YouTube .If you would like to see this motor in action.
On YouTube search "all fritz Johnson 40 HP".

The motor looks close to new. The fellow I purchased it from said it belonged to his father and he only remembers it being used a few times. For some reason his father sold the boat but not the motor. He was only about ten at the time and could not remember the details. It has been setting covered in his father's basement until last fall. From the looks of the flywheel teeth I would guess this old girl has only been started twenty-five or thirty times. It has a 1963 Ohio outboard sticker on it, I have no idea if these were annual or multi-year.

I mixed up some gas and oil, heavy on the oil and sprayed some in both sparkplug holes and in the carburetor. Checked compression and spark, both are fine. Next I drained the lower end and replaced the gear lube old lube looked as good as the new. Then put it in my basement for the winter. It will be going on a 1963 14' aluminum Aero-Craft that I am redoing. All being carried on a 1956 Gator tilt trailer that I finished last fall. I plan on this being a regular user.

Now the Questions,
How long do the original coils last ? What makes them go bad ? Should I just replace them ?
I assume it will start. Should I see if it pumps water or just replace the impeller ?
What about the lower end, run it and check the gear lube or just put in a new seal kit ?

Thanks, Fritz

It just may start right up.
It is probably a good idea to pour some transmission oil into the cylinders and let it sit for a day to loosen up the rings and soften possible rust on the walls
You must replace the impeller first, it is most probably crumbs by now.
Those are very strong and good engines

No big rush to start now as winter has returned to Michigan. Here is my plan as of now. 1st replace fuel lines with Ethanol-resistant ones. If they are free of residue I will leave the carb and fuel pump alone. 2nd Replace the water pump impeller. 3rd Since I will have the lower end off I am going to put a seal kit in. 4th For now I am going to leave the originals coils. Sure wish I knew how long these will last and when they go bad, why. I am not worried about sticky rings or cylinder wall rust as motor tested out at 108lb compression.

I have posted a few more pictures. Three of the motor and one each of the boat and trailer.

Fritz that is a very sweet, mint looking old engine you've found there. I remember those well from my youth. Do you also have the solenoid box for the starter?

Yes bonz it was a great find. Had to make about an 7hr round trip to get it but with the condition and price it was well worth it. Did get all wiring right up to starter switch and key. Also came with control box and cables. The boat and trailer I found about a mile from our cottage. Now that I have this baby I am thinking about giving away my other project. It is a 1957 wood runabout. Just To much sanding for my shoulder.

racerone so you think the coils go bad just from age ?

Not just a case of thinking they go bad.--I and many others know they go bad with time.---Did some 1970 motors over this winter that have the exact same ignition system all 5 motors have new ignition coils now.

No Title

well racerone you were right on with coils going bad over time. They were still sending out good spark but were junk. One good jar and they would have fell apart. This motor has very few hours and no signs of ever running hot. Came apart in my hand when I removed them.

I just picked up the exact motor as a boat, motor and trailer package for $100. Motor is used but I know the guy I bought from. His grandfather bought it and it was apparently well maintained. Still has the original sales slip..The motor is all there and looks quite good under the hood. Its obvious it has been maintained.

A question for those of you responding to Fritz on this topic. Will my battery be charged when the motor is running? I'm getting conflicting answers to this questions when asked in other places but I figure this is the post to ask it in. I have the exact same motor as Fritz. No generator just an electric starter.

By the way Frtiz the outboard is beautiful. Wish mine looked that good.

A belt driven generator was available as an option.-If that is not there the battery needs occasional charging.
