I've never seen one like that before. It's pretty neat looking. I'm betting that it's more like a late '40s early '50s, but I could be wrong. It looks older than my '56 15 hp anyway. Stick around, someone will have an idea on it.

Nice looking old motor. You can find a lower shroud at any of these salvage yards:

sea-way.com
engine blade and prop.com
outboard-parts.com
laingsoutboards.com
tcoutboard.com
fairwindsmarina.com
salvagemarine.com
marinepartsoutlet.com
outboardexchange.com
Superior Marine (800-338-9281)
budgetboats.net
americanoutboard.com
piratemarinesalvage.com
trixieslanding.com
mmmarinesalvage.com
tcoutboards.com

Mix the gas at 16:1. No thinner than 24:1 These motors are the friction type, meaning no needle bearings whatsoever, so don't let anyone tell you different. I would had to see you nuke a rod in that beauty anyway:D
This link will give you a complete parts break down of your entire motor,

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/v...ntage-evinrude-johnson/379267/37926700001.htm

If the model is a JW-18 then it is infact a 1963. Excellent motors. They are derrived from the older HD model from the late 40's In 1969, they were upgraded to a 4hp. Still the same basic design, but a bit beefier in construction and different shrouding, all together.

That's pretty cool. Do you have that for all the old Johnson/Evinrude motors?

I have several of this vintage, and a great number of them that I find for sale are missing the lower tin. Early on, the thinking was that the OMC 3 hp was a hot running motor, and that they ran cooler with the bottom exposed to the lake air. This is probably a legitimate thought, however, I think the real problem was the Mfg. recommendation that you run leaner gas (50-1) on this outboard.(OMC suggests 50-1 on 1960 and newer 3hp) You can find the missing cowl parts, and run 24-1 and you will be fine.

From the rumor dept: they SAY that one of these 3hp was found in the pyramids buried with some Pharos, and when they put gas in, she fired right up!! Bottom line is, they run for ever.

good luck... see ya out there!

I think a lot of people think it was a nuisance to put back on, so they leave it off and end up loosing it.:D
