forward gear.jpg

Have a barn find 1963 10 hp Johnson. Ran it a number of times and noted it "jumped gear" while running at full throttle a few times. I researched some posts and based on what I read I suspected the shifting dog was worn. Opened up the lower unit I confirmed the edges of dog were well rounded over so that will be replaced. There is a some wear on the the forward gear which is noted in the photo if I posted this right. Looking for some opinions - should I replace the forward gear too? Also, does anyone have any good leads on sources for these parts? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Im having trouble seeing the pic, but if you can say that the machined edges are rounded off, you may want to replace.

Try the salvage yards listed in the FAQS, posting a wanted ad in the webvertize at aomci.org, checking ebay, etc....

By all means, replace both pieces.......a worn part running against anew part will quickly yield two matched worn parts.

Please post the complete model number of your engine and we'll find ya' parts.

Kind of hard to tell from the photo. Hey, it's always a judgement call even if you have it in hand (unless it is so bad there is no doubt).

There seems to be too much soap on that gear to tell how it looks. The best thing to do, is take it out on a sunny day and re-shoot the pic. If there's any pitting on it, then I would definately chuck it.

Hey Zephyr....forget the soap and train your 'ole eyes on the worn/tapered ramps on the inside diameter of the tooth ring. This is where the shift dogs have worn ramps into the forward gear to the point that the wedge will no longer hold a load.

Again, replace the shift dogs AND gear. :)

Best to replace the forward gear as it has quite abit of ware on the dog contact aeras and will ware a new dog out fairly quick causing another tear down and more $$$$ to do it again. Doing it right the first time is the best $$ saver in the long run. JMO

Have you pulled the driveshaft out? If so, check for scoring on the shaft where it goes through the lower unit bushing. I had one where the driveshaft had wallowed out the bushing and required replacing the entire lower unit. Better to know now...

Re: 1963 Johnson 10hp forward gear issue

Hi rick. Welcome to iboats. I used to have a 10 hp myself. It was a great little motor, but had the same clutch dog issues. Thankfully, I was able to get a new one for a reasonable price. Check ebay, marineengine.com and/or aomci.org for any bits and pieces you may need. I would try to get a new FWD gear while you're at it. It would be a shame to put it all back together only to realize the gear was bad after all. You'll also want/need to reseal the lower unit when you do the job. You can get a reseal kit right here at iboats for about $25. You'll also need a tube of 3M 847 gasket sealant, or similar product. Here are some great links that can walk you through a tune up from top to bottom. Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.

replacement of both gear & dog is by far the best solution, Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuutttttttt, you mite be able to get by with swapping your reverse gear for the fwrd, then re-square the dog corners with a file. It might get you back on the water until you can find new-er parts. good luck

Thanks. I have decided to replace both dog and gear. Shopping around now for these parts and a few others I want/need. Great heads up on seal kit, I had not seen yet and was looking for individual pieces.

Thx for suggestion. I went and reinspected driveshaft, looks good. Glad I checked, want to do this right first time. Also gotta figure caution is indicated when dealing with a 49 year old motor, never know what you will find.

You're very likely right about that.
