Hello, I purchased this motor from a friend last summer. He said he had started it up just before i picked it up. I put it into my dads basement untill this summer and decided to try it out. Since it was in running condintion, i figured i'd just put new plugs and new lower unit oil it it. (1963 Evinrude 18hp electric start). Well, as soon as I took the screws out of the lower unit nothing but water came out, I'm thinking that's not good. I filled up the lower unit with oil anyway. Then I tried to start it and it wouldn't start. No spark. So thats when I discovered this forum and ordered some stuff. I ordered a lower unit seal kit, a water pump impeller kit, carberator kit, points and selenoids. Like I said this is my first outboard motor and i'm getting in deep here, but is there something else i should be looking at as well? For those gaskets do you use regular gasket goop?

Before investing money in a motor, I first check compression. If it has good compression, most other issues can be addressed for a reasonable price and with reasonable effort. Your lower unit seal leak may be as simple as missing nylon washers on the drain and vent bolts. I'd try the new washers first before tearing into the gearcase. The other seals are not that difficult to change, but a special punch is needed to remove the shift rod bushing. A $10 seal puller will remove the driveshaft seal, and the propshaft seal can usually be punched out through holes in the bushing. No spark could be a number of things, but is usually due to old cracked coils or dirty, misadjusted points. You'll need a harmonic wheel puller to remove the flywheel. If it looks like the coils are original, I usually go ahead and replace everything under the flywheel, including plug wires. Then you won't have to change them again for another 40 years.

Thats fast response. thanks so much. I have the harmonic puller and have read the article in the secret files. I'll have to research plug wires. You mentioned nylon washers, is that something that will be in the seal kits I purchased? Also, is there supposed to be a washer on the lower unit drain plugs? There wasn't any. In order to install all the things in the lower unit seal kit i'm going to have to make/purchase some tools? Is this something i'd have to do in order to install the water pump impeller? I wasn't joking about being new to this. Thanks for your patience.

If there were no nylon washers on the drain and vent screws that is very likely a major source of your water intrusion. They will be in the seal kit.

To do the water pump, your basic tool kit will do.

Update. I pulled the flywheel. One coil was badly discolored.
The plug wire just fell out, and was corroded. In process of replacing.
There are beige color brillo pads with the new points, purpose?
As always comments suggestions much welcome. Hope cellphone
does this right. __,,

beige color brillo pads

I'll have to remember that description :)

That is a wick type oiler that has the purpose of keeping the cam oiled and thus reducing the wear on the rubbing block of the point sets.

Under one of the coils you will find the remains of the old one. There is an odd-shaped post with a retainer. Slip the "Brillo Pad" into that and position it so that it touches the cam.

That's the part that I always forget to install until I have the coils installed and everything adjusted. AAAARGH!

Nice pics. I hope you have some of those for when I do the lower unit. I've never seen inside of one.
also I've been studying the plug wire replacement I hope it's easier than it looks. Looking forward to your comments.

Remove the mag plate from the motor to change the plug wires. It's held on by 4 bolts - 2 long bolts through the coils and 2 shorter bolts next to the bolts which hold the points down. Then just loosen the clamps which hold the wires in place and pull them free. To feed the new ones in, I usually spray them with a little fogging oil to make them slide easier. Push them through the openings in the mag plate a little further than needed to make it easier to get them mounted properly in the coils, and twist the coils into the plug wire ends, Or work backwards and twist the plug wires into the coils before feeding the wires through the openings in the mag plate. Make sure all the clamps are tight before re-mounting the mag plate. I usually remove, clean and re-grease the brass retainer ring and aluminum retainer which the mag plate bolts onto. Make sure the aluminum retainer has the flat side up when re-installing.

If you end up removing the points and condensors....pay attention to the screws. They look very similar and are in fact the same thread...but the screw that holds the points is short. Try using the longer condensor screw in there and it will be long enough to make contact with the brass retaining ring below....effectively freezing the mag plate.

Ask me how I know this :)

Hello guys. I hope you had a good July. It was a blur for me. Finally had some time to work on my motor. I have replaced Points, Condensers, Coils. I just however made a rookie mistake and pulled both spark plug wires to replace them without taking note of what went to what. So I'd welcome some wisdom on that. thanks. Gerry.

Front coil equal top plug, front coil will be the one with the throttle advancer under it. Make sure when you install the plug wires you twist them onto the screw post in the coil.
