I've got a 1963 evinrude big twin 40 (not the electrical shift) that's been acting up. Past 3 times I've been out it has not wanted to go into forward gear. First two times it was just hard to get it engaged and would slip out of gear at low speeds. Last time I was out I could not get it into forward at all. I took it apart and found a few things. First, there was no thrust washer between the propeller and the gear casing. Second, the bronze? Coupling that connects the upper and lower shift shafts had a stripped out bolt and was probably not holding. I am looking at the forward and reverse gears as well as the dog now but I'm not sure how much wear is too much and would cause slipping, so I figured I'd come to the forum. Everything else looks ok. Are these gears too worn down?

Those parts do not look bad.-----Perhaps replace the brass connecter.----Line up notches with holes before putting the bolts in.----Check shift adjustment at the shift lever.---Test run.
