I just bought a boat and motor off a friend for a couple hundred bucks, and when I went to start it, there was nothing at all. I charged the battery, the lights work, and the bildge works, but when I turned the key there was nothing. I looked under the "dash" and there was a mess of wiring, a real rats nest with wires that went no where, some were frayed and spiced... a real mess.

I don't know a lot about marine engines, just learning, I was wondering if someone knew where I could get a wiring manual, online (free would be good), as well as any other tips or tricks to figure out the wiring.

Thanks Peter

Welcome to Iboats, pmasson!

I'll be straight-up with you. If you're going to work on your outboard, you're going to need a service manual. For inexpensive manuals, you can check one out at your local library, or get the Johnson manual on CD from acmeoutboards.com. There is no difference between a '63 Evinrude and a '63 Johnson.
That said, I do have a link to a schematic:
http://mercury.walagata.com/w/chapsboy/5557180.jpg

Also, have a look at these articles:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000001
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000033
And especially this one (which should be a FAQ):
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=036633#000000

The neutral safety switch is just beneath the flywheel on the starboard side of the motor. It is attached to the solenoid by a junction at the base of the vaccum cutout switch.

Hope this gets you started!
