Hi, I have an old 1963 Mercury 35 Hp.
Bought the SELOC manual for service and repair,
only available for models 1965 and up, my outboard is very similar to the 1965 one.... here
is the question, I want to know if my outboard has a charging circuit (stator, etc...) in the SELOC manual is not very clear if the ignition system for the 65 model has one, any one can help? or this motor only uses the battery for
cranking but cannot charge it back??

Thank you.

stator sits on top of flywheel, look for wires
going from there. my '70 115hp rec is on right
side. maybe time to get a FACTORY manual?

Re: 1963 35hp (350) big doubt

Your '63 Merc 35hp is a twin cylinder model and DOES NOT have a charging system, nor does it have provisions for one. It has a magneto ignition which uses up most of the space under the flywheel. If you wanted to spend lots of time, effort and frustration you might be able to doctor in an OMC generator from a 1960s Johnrude 40hp, but it would cost you more than the motor is likely worth. The simple and inexpensive way to keep your battery up is to purchase a solar battery charger, available through West Marine and the like... You will likely get a lot of starts out of your existing battery without charging, provided the motor starts easily, the battery is fully charged & in good shape and you're not running lights, fish-finders, stereo, etc.
- Scott
