First - "THANKS TO ALL"
My motor starts fine , idels fine, when put in gear it only goes about 5MPH? I have changed the needle and float in the carb. Maybe it is not a fuel issue? I have not pulled the flywheel yet, I just got this unit and dying to get it right for my kids boat. Do you think I need to look at electrical? I am very mechanical so not worried about getting into it if needed. I have a test tank and can run her w/o prop, but if I use the prop all the water runs out of tank and do not want to run her dry at all. Thanks in advance- Chris

Welcome to the forum!

You sure dont want to run motor dry. How many RPM'S is the motor turning when your on the water going 5mph.

Is motor speed in sync. with boat speed. Or is motor reveing high and boat going no where fast. If so prop is slipping. pin is sheared in prop.

If motor wont rev up. Then Idd do a real good job of rebuilding and cleaning carbs.

Remove all welch plugs and clean with carb. cleaner and compressed air.

Once you have done that let us know how she runs.

Idd also rebuild water pump if you havent already.

I would also recomend getting an OEM service manual for your motor.

Good luck!

Lee-I do not know what the RPM's are. there is a guage in the boat from a very old Keifer (mercury) but not sure if I can use it or how to wire it up. (any sugesstions on that)I would love to get it working so that I can see RPM's. When I move the throttle forward it just does not rev up like it should?
I have cleaned the carb thourghly 2 times now with cleaner and compressed air. However never got into a welch plug, I may look at that? I do have a seloc manual and parts books. The primer bulb stays hard and does not help when I try to squeeze it. I have been reading posts and going to look at the LYNC/SYNC issue as Paul has stated in other posts. Thanks- Chris

It is very important to remover welch plugs. Just about impossible to clean carbs really good without removeing and replaceing with new ones ofcourse.

and also to make sure the lead shot plugs are good and tight in their seats. If they are lose it will suck air around them.

Good Luck!

Somehow Seloc left that most important step of a carb rebuild out. Here's some instructions on how to remove and clean behind it:

Disassembling:
Your new carb kit ought to come with a replacement, slightly convex core plug. Before proceeding, make sure it is the same size as as the one you are about to remove. If all is well, drill a 1/8" hole in the centre of the core plug. Then insert a small screwdriver or nail through the hole, and pry the plug out. It is very important that while drilling and prying, you do not let anything damage the surfaces underneath the plug. So restrict the drill bit from piercing much more than 1/16" beyond the core plug.

Assembling:
Coat the outside edge of the core plug with a slight amount of fuel proof gasket sealer. (Although this step isn't strictly necessary, I find it helps seal the plug and saves problems down the road.) Now place the plug convex side up atop the boss where the plug rests. Then, using a small drift and hammer, tap the top of the core plug so it expands until it jams tightly against the core plug's socket. Give it one extra tap for good measure.

If no carb adjusting, etc, helps be sure to check spark. When all is well you'll be able to draw 1/4"-3/8" long sparks off each wire. A common failure of the ignition system will allow arcs over very short distances (a spark plug gap for example) but not over long.

The Seloc entry on link & sync is not very clear. Have a look at my post here for clarification:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=033290#000006

Hope this helps!

Re: 1963 28HP No Power in gear

She is finally going. It was one coil it was all cracked and burn marks all over it. I purchased 2 new ones and she runs about 25mph. I have yet to find out how to hook up an old KieKhafer tach I have to it so that I can see if she is putting out all it has. Is 25 MPH good for this 28hp 1963 evinrude. The boat is fiberglass and only weighs about 200lb w/o the motor. The boat is only 11.5' long. Thanks Again for everyones help. I read the forums all day.
Chris

I would expect you to be running a little bit faster than that, more like low thirties. Did you try adjusting the high speed control on the carb? You might also want to pop out the spark plugs and have a look at their firing ends to see how they look (if they're relatively new).

Can you see any numbers on the propeller? They might be behind the thrust washer, just behind the drive pin.

Re: 1963 28HP No Power in gear

I plan on trying to adjust the high needle a little bit more this weekend. I will also look at the new plugs that I put in. The stock prop is another issue I really am having a hard time finding out what pitch it is? The only numbers & letters on it are: 737 Z, SMC, MICHIGAN, A, 5.

I have been to Michigan wheel and tried to have them cross ref. it- no luck. They told me to run a 14 pitch. It would be nice to know what I am running now.

Thanks alot Paul- I have sent you messages in the past and you have been very helpful, also love the Yellow Motor. I though I should maybe get a few more MPH out of her, she does purr very good at idle and runs nice and smooth.
Chris
