I have a 1963 18 HP Johnson and I installed a new impeller and I bought a new carb. kit. How hard is it to install the carb. kit and how much water should be comming out if the water pump, if it is running correctly. Also where should the water be comeing from? I have verry little water comming out of the exaust now, is that right?

Carb is fairly simple and not that difficult to rebuild. Take pictures if it's your first one, so that you get it back together properly. Make sure to soak it well in carb cleaner and blow out all the passageways. Remove the welch plug on top and clean the openings under there. I use a twist-tie wire. Make sure to remove all remnants of old packing from the needle seats and blow out thoroughly. Examine the needles and make sure they're not deformed from overtightening. Water should be spitting and flowing pretty strong out of the exhaust relief port on the back of the motor if working properly.

Hard to tell you how much water should be pumped...you should be able to touch the powerhead however without getting burn't. Carb kit is not that hard on these models. You have 2 adjustable needles with packings and jamb nuts. I believe 5 screws take the bowl off the bottom of the carb. Look at your parts diagram that comes with the rebuild kit, take out the knock outs and spray carb cleaner through every hole and blow compressed air through every hole...replace the needle and seat...15 minute job on most 18 hp Johnson's after you have done a few. Make sure when you reassemble flip the carb upside down and set the float level to the part of the carb that that the bowl bolts to. Reassemble...Hope this helps...it is hard to go into all of the details in just a single post...if you have questions I will check back in when I can.

So should there be a steady stream of water comming out of the exhaust...because I have almost a mist as it compresses. I guess that is the best way to describe it.

Also what should be cool to the touch if the water pump is working? In other words where should I be able to feel that the water is cooling it?

SHould be more than a mist. More like a strong spray/shower out the exhaust relief port. You should be able to touch the cylinder head for at least 3 seconds without getting burned, or splash a little water on the head. If it sizzles, it's too hot.

You can't really put the impeller in backwards. It will right itself when the engine is running. How is the thermostat?

It is hot. Water sizzles when I splashed it up on it. What else might it be?

Not 100% accurate. IF the impeller is installed so the veins don't push the water up the inlet tube, then it can run hot, yet still have a flow. I know from that expence with my 64 Johnson 20hp.

Good news, took the lower unit off and cleaned out all openings with a piece of wire and made sure the sending pipe was connected and it works great. Moving lots of water now, keeping it cool. Changed out the plugs and ran great, I think it was only firing on one plug becasue it runs a lot faster than it was. Thanks for the help.
