Hi all!

I just purchased a 15' 1962 Starcraft Jet and took it out on the lake a few times. I have a quick question about the weight distribution on these old boats. With the motor (1974 Johnson 50), two tanks of gas and a battery behind the back seat, the stern is very heavy. I literally need to be traveling at WOT at all times to keep the bow down and even then it is so light that it is not a comfortable ride when passing over a wake or chop. Is this normal for these boats? I am considering putting a ballast in the bow (maybe a bag or two of play sand or something) to give it a better ride.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Steve - you are correct....alot of people have moved the gas tanks up front - something that I am going to do off season - plus in a little Jet things are more pronounced - move two 6 gallon tanks up front has a 250 lb weight shift (+125 up front -125 in back). If you have the means - get a new above deck tank and a bow mounted filler and get rid of the loose 6 gallon old school tanks.

I have contemplated how I can move stuff around since redistributing the weight would be the best option. I just don't think there is enough room in the bow to put those two 6 gallon tanks. I know there are some specialty tanks I can buy that fit in the bow but as I use fuel, they will get lighter and my ballast changes. I am trying to figure out how I can extend the cables on my motor so the battery can go up front. That might help and will not change weight as the day wears on. I am not sure on how I want to handle this.
