Took the Evinrude out yesterday and had problems with it cutting out on the way to high rpm's. It would start to rev up, then down, up, down then roar off OK. Seems to be something loose in ignition system because it was like a switch, on, off, on, off. Stalled out once after trolling along and it was a B to get it going again. Any advice on where to start? Haven't had a chance to check plugs yet, going to do that today.

Any advice appreciated as I'm just a newbie to this.

Sounds like a coil cutting out. You probably need to check spark for consistency. If the coils are old and cracked, they will cut out with the symptoms you describe.

Lindy, thanks for your reply 'fraid you may be right. Started with the plugs one was textbook white/ gray, the other a bit darker. the lead that corresponded with the darker pug didn't seem to want to spark when I was testing it. Pulled the flywheel and saw that both coils were a bit cracked on the surface. Also had a red wax type covering that didn't seem factory.

Just to prevent further exposure I mixed up some epoxy and smeared it over the area of concern. I then noticed problem sides points might of had some grit (hope) and I cleaned, gapped that away. Put it back together and have sparks. Hope this solves it, but I'm not 100%. Have to see on the open water again.

Anyone know of a good source of coils and such for this vintage?.

Thanks

Ron

Any of your marine dealors will stock coils for these. They were commonly used in all OMC twins from 1951, on up into the 70's, 2hp up to 40hp.

If you live in a area that doesn't have a lot of marine shops, you can order parts from NAPA. They have a marine catalog and I know they carry the coils, points, and condensers for your motor. They can normally get next day deliver to the store and you won't have to pay shipping charges. You can also order them online here at iboats or from sierra marine.

That's true. I've bought coils from Napa and they're just like the ones the dealors have.

Thanks for all your replies. After I made my post I started looking for a source and found them available all over and ranging from $13 to 30 dollars a pop. Also found that I can use my dormant 20 as a donor.

Glassmaster,

If the coils are working now, albeit cracked wouldn't the epoxy suitably stabilize them?

If my coils were old, cracked and repaired, I wouldn't want to take a chance being out on the water when they fail. Replace them and you can have peace of mind.
