the previous owner told me to use a 50:1 gas oil mixture, i bought a manual for this motor and it tells me to usea 24:1 mixture. the motor was bogging down as i was throttling up, so i took off carburetor, cleaned it and replaced the spark plugs. but before i test it, i want to make sure i have the correct oil to gas ratio, can someone point me in the right direction for this, thanks

24:1 is correct. Use TCW3 2 stroke oil.

The 24:1 mix was for using the SAE 30 weight oils, of the day. I run 50:1 in all my old rudes, and mercs. Just use good quality TCW3 low ash oil. Running 24:1 won't really hurt the motor, but it will cause carbon depositing more offten, and dirtier plugs, sooner.

Re: 1962 johnson oil gas mixture

thank you all for your replies, appreciate it, this is my first boat, and only have some basic knowledge about motors, so i appreciate your help, i cetainly need it :)
think i will just have to try both and see what runs better, it might be somewhere in between

the motor is a johnson super seahorse, 75 hp, model V4-AL-14L,

also, do you have any preference on Grade of gas, 87,89,93.

thanks

89, I wouldn't run 87, the higher octane will help offset the possiblity of pre ignition, which can melt or hole pistons.

Disreguard anything that says 100:1 Run 50:1 OMC did a big recall on motors that were "designed to run on 100:1" A lot of customers got rebuilds because of it. I actually had a motor that benefited from this recall. Of course, it was years before I bought it, but I still had a motor with low hours on a rebuilt powerhead.:D

Oh you can bet i disregard that, a long time back. Iin fact I doubted it from the get go. That might be why I still have it running in the fleet so to speak.
