Hey, I was having some problems with my 1962 40hp johnson and figured I would seek some help on here before i take it to a macanic. I dont know much about outboard motors so you'll to be a bit patient for me.

So when i first put the boat in the water this year it ran a little bit rough and didnt have a lot of speed a full throttle so i was a little concerned. When i got home i took the case off and had a good look over everything and all i saw was a few loose this here and there that i tightned up. I figure it was going to need a good tune up from a macanic.

The next weekend i decided to take the boat out so i could test out a new trolling motor that i bought, and figured i would fire up the johnson to see how she would run. To my surprise it actually ran great. had lots of power and there wasnt one thing i could complain about.

So this past weekend we take the boat out again for some fishing, and once again the boat ran awesome for the first half of the day. then all of the sudden i fired it up.. and when i went to give it full throttle, and it started to really bog and would have stalled if i didnt back off on the throttle.

so the rest of the day i basically had to run it with half throttle. the odd thing is that when i slowly bring the boat to full throttle it will stay running ok.. but doesnt have much power and you can here that its struggling not to stall sometimes.

does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? I know this is a lengthy post.. i just thought it would try and give as much info as i could.

any ideas that you think a person with very little knowledge of outboards would be able to try to get it to run good would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Re: 1962 Johnson help.

Hi Dave

First of all...please give us the model number and serial number. Located on the transom clamp and also on the engine block. It's tough to answer questions without it.

Re: 1962 Johnson help.

I would start with some basic checks, spark and compression. Make sure the spark will jump a 1/4" and have a bright blue spark on an air gap tester. The comrression should be around 100, but needs to be within 10% of each other. If those check out it might be time to check over the fuel system for leaks and loose connections. You might also check the fuel pump pressure and flow. It could be time to overhaul the carb.

Re: 1962 Johnson help.

I meant to post the serial and model number but i must have forgotten. I am at work right now and had the model number written down in my wallet but i dont have the serial number. The model number is RDSL-24L.

I had another quick question for you guys. I originally thought that this motor would only start if it was in neutral. Now i know that it will start in any gear.. so i usually just start it in forward. does this make any difference to my motor? would i be better off always starting in in neutral and then putting it into gear after? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but it was on my mind so i thought i would ask.

I am going to buy a compression tester and some other things on the weekend.. and hopefully get someone with more knowledge to come give me a hand. I am trying to do this without spending a ton of cash on it so hopefully its nothing major lol.

Thanks again for the advise given so far!
