I recently was given this engine by my neighbor. I replaced condenser and points. coils seem fine when i went to replace these (after pulling the flywheel) I noticed that the flywheel key has been sheared. it puzzled me so i went on the hunt for some key stock went to auto zone here in Michigan and found some key stock after a couple of marine places told me i wouldn't be able to find it because my engine is to old. installed the key put the flywheel on which the key fit perfect on slop in it at all.

before starting the engine i pulled the spark plugs and cranked the engine to make sure i was getting spark. ya i was. everything moved freely and effortlessly. put the spark plugs back in cranked the engine over a boom it ran and sounded great as i was adjusting the high and low speed fuel I stalled the engine waited a sec for the engine to settle and went to crank her over again and she wouldn't. so i pulled the flywheel off again and the key was sheared again not sure what is causing it any ideas? i would also like the to know the gap for the points if anyone knows what it should be at.

Points gap is .020" Now for the key: I assume you had to do some work on the hardware store key to make it fit? It is not a "standard" key. That stuff about not being able to get it because it is too old is a crock of BS. The part number is 307480 and any Johnson or Evinrude dealer can get you one if he doesn't already have it in stock.

To keep it from shearing you have to be sure the crankshaft and flywheel tapers are smooth and undamaged and clean and dry. Then use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 100-105 ft/lbs. Failure to follow these instructions guarantees another sheared key and possible (probable) damage to the shaft and flywheel.
