Hi I have two questions about a 1962 Evinrude 40hp. I went to check the thermostat and it was missing. Should there be one? And what would be the affects on performance without one?
My second problem is there is a single wire that comes out of the back of the motor right next to the lower spark plug, It is busted off and I was wondering what that is for and what it should connect to. If anyone knows please help. Thank You

Yep....there should be one. Running a cold engine means poor idle and the combustion is not great....black spark plugs and stuff like that. And always a chance to cold sieze the engine.

Put a new stat in it.

As for the single wire....

I have a different model year 40 Evinrude, but the principle of operation should be the same.

Typically the temperature switch is connected to the tan harness wire. The other lead is connected to ground. I would be curious though, as to why the wire is broken/disconnected. The switch may have been faulty?

You can check the switch by immersing it in hot water, and checking for continuity between the wires. The switch simply completes the circuit above 210°F. The circuit should open again when it cools below 175°F.

The temperature switch tan wire is normally connected to a warning light in the dash console (or buzzer) to indicate an overheat condition.

Hope this helps.

I've got a 63 40hp, it has the hot water choke on carb. If yours has that setup I would assume that choke wouldn't function properly without a t-stat in the automatic setting on choke lever.

Cajun and Ryan, I also had a hot water choke on my 40HP. It rusted up and was useless 30 years ago. Check to make sure yours are still working. If not, there is a manual choke setting that always worked well.

I have a 1961 Johnson 40 H.P.. Model RDS-23. I too have the hot water choke idea as well, but I haven't used it. I too have a broken wire at the back of the power head. I believe it is the temperature switch and that it was diconeccted due to not working any more. I have not checked mine out but it sounds the same as yours. One wire is attached to ground and the other wire has been cut.
