Hi, still trying to stop the lower from popping in and out of forward. Anyone ever tried shimming the pinion down with a shim washer where it meets the driveshaft?
Thanks, Skyler

Would like to help but have no idea as to how. If you feel like that'll work, are careful, and are willing to accept the failure.............as well as the win......go for it. It's your equip, your idea, and your win if you do. Might pass on your findings for those asking the question later.

Is the drive shaft bushing worn sloppy in the gearcase just above the pinion? If so, that thing is toast. But you would see severe damage to the gear teeth due to improper mesh. They'd be toast too.

Popping in and out of gear is happening on the propshaft itself. You have at least a worn clutch dog,and maybe a bad forward gear.

Otherwise,as suggested, the teeth on the gears would be damaged.Severely.

Thanks to all.
No the shaft bushing above the pinion seems tight, And yes, there was some movement in the propshaft! I have another forward gear bushing from a 54' and it fit! so that tightened up most all the play. The gears look good, The pinion has a small chip but I don't think that is the problem A factory millright neighbor of mine noticed some wear in the dog so I turned it around, I'll assemble it tommorrow and post results after a test. I'll let the shim idea wait for now, Thanks again, Skyler

Good Luck on dressing up the gears. When I restored my '65 120 mercuriser it was a total restoration and part of that was sloppy shifting. The drive gears and dog had the edges worn off.......I learned very quickly that those gears are hardened and when they say hardened they mean hardened. I had a machine shop owner throw me out of his place (sorta) cause they were too hard for him to cut.......now, they might respond to grinding if you can get a grinder where you need to grind.....but what you really need is a mil and they're too tough for that.....now if you know someone who knows how to knock the temper out of them and put it back when finished, then walla.

Hello again, I was able to dress the shift dog easily with a dremmel and stone. I also dressed the gear some. Temper did not seem to be a problem with these old parts, not sure why. After a test run today, I have no problems at all so far. Pherhaps it will hold for awhile. Once again, thanks to all for sharing your knowledge.
