While working on the lower on the 62 10hp, I noticed the lower hole on the shift rod connector was stripped. There is some play in the lower shift rod at that point about 3 /16th inch when the srew is tightened as far as it will. Does that brass connector act as a squeeze clamp or is it just a connector? I see the indentation in the rod where the screw goes through. I'm hoping if it acts as a clamp, a new connector and screw would fix it.
Thanks, Skyler

Yes, the connector is a squeeze clamp. More often than not, the bolts are over tightened and stripped. If the threads will not clean up with a tap, most J/Rude dealers will carry them, either new or used.

Thanks OBJ, I do have a 1/4 tap. I think it was a fine thread, I will try that,

yep it is a fine thread, problem with those connecters is more than a clamp, they are machined so the grooves in the shafts allow the screws to fit with minimal clearance, they really just want to be snugged up only enough for the lock washer to do its job,if one of the holes is ok,I have used a longer bolt and backed it with a lock nut, tightened only enough that it could rotate alowing the nut to be on backside and then installing the last screw, stainless hardware should be used, many people think you need to crank down hard, thats wrong, the steel screws will strip the brass out in a heartbeat, also be sure the alignment is right, crossthreading isa prob.surely there is a torque measurement but dont know it

Ok on the bolt\nut trick Mike. That I will try also. I hope the rod groove is not worn, We'll see. Thanks
