I've been lurking while contemplated purchasing a boat. I finally bit the bullet and bought a my first power boat, a 1961 Sea King package (complete, even the trailer!). The motor is a 60hp Sea King (Gale) GG-18746B which I had out on the water on Friday. It ran pretty good - I found that the tilt bolt is missing (reverse was impossible) and there's a small fuel leak which I believe is coming from the carburetor (there was fuel mix on top of the intake manifold - no higher). Everything else seems acceptable (need to get a nice polish on the gelcoat - meh).
I have above-average mechanical skills and want to get going on giving the motor a good once-over but am humbled and confused by the conflicting information regarding a service manual. A while back, I came across a document with the title 'Evinrude, Gale & Johnson - 4-Cylinder 50 to 85 hp (1958-1968)' - a very generic-looking basic manual. It seems to imply that my motor is equivalent with an Evinrude 50524/25/26/27, a Gale 60D11B/12B/13B and a Johnson V4S-13/V4A-13 (whew).
I have downloaded an Evinrude service manual (much more comprehensive) for the 50524/25/26/27 - the diagrams seem to look a lot like what I've got. Can anyone chip in and tell me if I'm on the right track?
What a fabulous resource this is... I'm bummed out about my 'Cadet' rank, but I'll work hard and see what happens ;-)
