I'm having trouble getting the lower unit apart on my 1961 Mercury-Kiekhaefer 6h. I'm trying to change the bearings and cannot remove the bearing carrier. I have removed the retaining ring and am now clueless as how to get the carrier out.

Any help would be great.

Merry Christmas.

With 2 hardwood blocks and a nut on the prop shaft clamp the shaft in a vice, then with anouther hardwood block and hammer drive the housing off the shaft.

I need to replace the needle bearing in the lower gear box for the vertical drive-shaft. Does your repair manual show how it's done? and do you have any illustrations of it that can be scanned and emailed?

You can trust any advice you get from Laddies but there are a lot of these old Mercs and parts for them on the Johns old Mercs site if you want to look them up.There is plenty of advice and help from folks who deal with these old engines routinely.
I would not be surprised to see laddies there as well although I don't know his user name.Ron G

Rear carrier & propshaft come out, with the reverse gear. Then remove the bolt from the end of the driveshaft. Remove the waterpump housing. Then use the same technique to remove the driveshaft as you used to remove the propshaft. Clamp the shaft in the vice and drive the l/u housing away from the shaft. Use a block of wood against the housing so you don't mar it up. The bearings will be visible inside the housing. I usually use a hardwood dowel of similar diameter to the bearing (slightly smaller) and drive the bearing into the housing 'til it pops into the gear area. Install new bearing from the top, using the dowel to push the bearing into place. Heating the housing with a propane torch may help it go in a little easier. Numbers side up on the bearing...
