I have a chance of picking up this motor which is an electric start for $200. Its in decent looking condition and I'm told it runs well except it needs a clutch dog but the gears are fine.
I have never replaced a clutch dog but I don't think it would be too tough to do.
Is this a good deal? Any things I should watch out for with this year motor?

Thanks,

If it needs a clutch dog, it may also need a new forward gear. A new dog will run over $100 at a dealer. Forward gear is even more expensive. You may be able to pick up a good used one for $50-75. Replacing is not all that difficult, but does require removal of the lower unit and separation of the gearcase. There are also some seals I would replace if I had to tear the gearcase down. I'd check compression on the motor also. If it has good compression and needs a new clutch dog, I'd offer him $100.

Thanks for the quick replies. I may be going to take a look at this later today, make an offer and see what happens.
