Just picked up a 1961 Evinrude Fastwin; The shifter "cable lock" arm is loose.

I don't have the factory service manual (yet). What do I have to take apart to get at the
loose/missing nut?

It probably is broken, not just loose. That was a common problem because the part is thin and easy to break with rough treatment. The hood probably flops around a bit loose too, doesn't it? That broken part also holds the two front rubber hood mounts.

Anyway, the powerhead has to be removed, then the lower shell of the hood to get at it.

The lower shell seems pretty solid, but if the bracket is supposed to reach the centerline,
then it looks like it has been sheared.

By powerhead, do you mean the block? That sounds like a joy and a half!

Can I guess that this won't be the last time I salute (Brooks Stevens?) stylish
industrial design of the hood??

You were right... And what a bear to find a replacement... And on the way I found my steering bracket had a major crack! Finally got it back together and out on the water
this week!

Thanks!
