My wife purchased a 1961 Evinrude 18HP Fastwin at a garage sale and I finally got around to see if I can get it to run. The engine seems to be in great shape (its just dirty) and I have very good spark and what appears to be good compression. Tonight I purchased a gas tank, gas, oil and a gas line but I need confirmation that the gas-oil mixture is 24:1. Can anyone confirm this for me?

Welcome to iboats.

Anything 1960-64 18hp and up should be run at 40:1, smaller hps run at 24:1 or all motors 1958 to 1960 runs at 24:1, ore 1958 run at 20:1

Thank you to everyone! I will set it up for 24:1 and see if she starts tonight. I am amazed at how clean this engine is and I can't wait to take it for a sip.:D

Good old engines. Tougher than shoe leather and very dependable. Yea, I would stick to the 24:1 mix. That should come to 5.333 ounces of oil to the gallon.;)

You might also think about replacing the water pump before you run it to much, might save the engine.

Good advise regarding the water pump. Any other words of wisdom will be appreciated. I have a manual on order so I will have that info to work form as well. Are there any typical problems I should check for beyond the water pump?

You might want to check/change the lower unit oil for water. If you change it, make sure to replace the gaskets on the drain and vent plugs.

Use synthetic or synthetic blend 2 stroke oil, less smoke and less pollution. Rick

I sure wish my wife would by me an outboard engine instead of trying to get rid of the ones I have.

She doenst even like being my apprentice in the driveway, just think of all the free knowledge Im giving her, and no appreciation!
