The engine runs great til you stop it. When you start it back up the hot light comes on. I have put a new Tstat in it.I also put a new water pump in it and both tubes are in place. So anyone know what could be worry this Johnson.

Re: 1961 40 hp Johnson not cooling

Welcome to iboats. :)

I guess now you have to find if it's truly getting hot, or if it's a false signal. The hot horn gets 12v+ with the key on. It gets it's ground connection when the overheat sensor completes the circuit. Could be a bad sender or a short in the wire somewhere between the horn and the sender.

Or it may actually be getting hot. Sometimes a blockage prevents water from circulating. Especially if the water pump impeller disintegrated. Fragments frequently wash up the system and form a blockage. You can usually clear this situation by backflushing thru the thermostat hole with the gearcase off.

Are you getting a good healthy water spray out of the back of the motor when it's running? Place your hand by the hole where it sprays out. If it gets good and wet within a few seconds, your motor is probably getting enough water. It may be distressingly hot when the motor has been running awhile, but it shouldn't be burning hot.

Thanks for the help.

The horn and sender are fine. The dealer here tested them and the wiring and both was good.

I backflush it when i put the new impeller in.

The engine is not getting that much water where is sprays out but i install a pee tube and water comes out fine til i trun it off. When i go to start the back up im getting no water at all. You cant hold your hand on the engine its getting that hot.

Try it with the stat out. See if the problem goes away... This is just for testing. Don't continue to run without the stat...

I took the boat out again today after flushing the engine out again. It run fine for about 15 to 20 mins pumping water out then it quit pumping water and started missing. Its like you just pull it out of the water. And i dont think its getting WOT.

Take the back lower shrourd off the engine. Just below the power head, and up on the exhaust housing, just below the power head you will see an exspansion plug about the size of a quarter dollar. Take this plug out, and you will three hole's in a triangular pattern. Clear out these three holes. The problem is, cooling water is getting in, but not getting out. This could be causing your over-heat.
