1960 Super Sea Horse 40 waterpump woes

Well I finally got the engine running and besides not wanting to idle it runs fairly well. Only run for a couple minutes at a time on a test stand in a barrel of water (40 gal drum)

I've noticed that there is no water circulation (hence the couple minuutes running at a time) I'm assuming water is supposed to be ejected from the outlet just below the powerhead....

I took the lower unit off today (wasn't too bad either, nothing seized up) Upon removal I noticed that one of the water tubes didn't look like it was inserted into the pump (covered in black soot from exhaust to it's tip)

I took the pump off and observed that the impeller looks way too long for the pump. I have a manual; and it shows exploded views of two types of lower end. One type has a single water tube and a radically curved impeller. The second shows the dual tube water pump and a much straighter vaned impeller. I'm attaching some pics of my pump and impeller. Perhaps one of you will be able to tell me if this is the correct impeller (Of this I have no doubt)

The pictures are rather large so I'll leave the links to them as I want as much detail as possible..

the veins are supposed to be bent when it is installed in the pump housing. it works as a displacement pump at low speeds and a centrifugal pump at high speeds. when you get it back together, drop it in the barrel and then remove the t-stat housing on the top rear of the power head(just above the spark plugs, a cover with three screws). then run the outboard a you should get a good spray of water out that hole. if you don't know how well your outboard has been cared for, just replace the pump impeller and t-stat to be on the safe side. let us know what ya find.

That outboard won't show water at the exhaust relief until the thermostat opens. Monitor the temperature of the cylinders with the hand test (you should be able to keep it on the cylinder for a few seconds, until it warms up enough to open the thermostat, after which time you should see water at the exhaust relief port.

Your impeller looks correct.

Also, you must have the leg immersed over the top of the water pump on that engine. I always did mine to about the middle of the leg, but that's overkill. Remember that the turbulence caused by the exhaust can interfere with water pickup, so keep the leg deep enough.

As someone suggested, you can pull the thermostat, replace the cover, and see if water is circulating, but that engine needs the thermostat in place to maintain proper operating temperature.

Don't take the black plastic thermostat HOUSING out. It won't pump properly without it and the white pressure relief valve below it.
