1960 Super Sea Horse 40 HP Wiring Harness

I just bought a boat and this engine came with it.
The story behind this engine is that the original Merc engine seized up. The previous owner purchased the Johnson which was freshly rebuilt.
The external wiring harness did not come with the engine. He had attempted to get the engine running using the pull cord to no avail (this was 5 years ago)

I am assuming that without the external harness/Ignition switch/battery etc that this engine would not have started anyway.

Where can a person acquire the external harness with the plugin at the engine?

Any assistance will be appreciated.

The motor will run by hand cranking (if it is going to run at all). No connections are needed to make it run. It's just like a lawnmower, choke it and pull the rope.

Speaking of choke, its an automatic choke but has manual override. Manually choke it for rope starting.

Go to aomci.org and post a free want ad for the wiring harness and junction box.

Re: 1960 Super Sea Horse 40 HP Wiring Harness

Steve, If memory serves me, there was no quick disconnect plug at the motor. The wiring was two battery cables, two killer wires, an overtemp wire and two generator wires, all of which went to an external transom-mounted box. This box held the starter solenoid and the mechanical voltage regulator for the generator. The killer wires, overtemp wire and starter solenoid was routed to the dashoard, along with +12V and ground all to the ignition switch. The ignition is magneto, so the killer wires were grounded to kill the ignition.

Thanks for the info fellas. I don't suppose anyone has a picture of what this thing is supposed to look like complete?

Here's a pic of the connection on the side of the engine (not the greatest pic though)

Steve,
At a time I found myself in a position you're in. I made a wiring harness, wire by wire, and used a trailer light connector outside the engine for a connector. I used a matching connector on the harness going to the dashboard.

Here's a diagram, I think by Paul Moir that may help you get through it.

Great link, larky! Yes, those things are horribly expensive, but finding a used one in good condition ain't easy. Most of them are corroded and difficult to restore. twincityoutboard.com often has used ones, but they're really expensive, too.

I think most owners cobble together a harness and direct wire it. It's certainly the easiest way to go.

i have a 58 35 which has the same basic wiring as yours but no generator. i use a toggle switch for the kill wires, push button for choke, and push button to activate the solenoid for the starter. this is my set up, and a picture of one of the original junction boxes, with out the regulator. hopefully this will help some.

Steve, Interestingly enough that quick disconnect looks a lot like the one on my '58 Fat-Fifty. My '61 Big Twin did not have the quick disconnect plug, although the dashboard wiring would have beeen the same between the two. I hope you find an affordable harness. BTW, the threaded hole on the edge of the socket held a Stainless screw with a thumbscrew head. It made the ground connection.

This doesn't seem correct.
By reading the wiring diagrams in this thread, each coil/set of points seems to need power from a battery to work. To kill the engine they disconnect the power to the points with cutout switch/ignition switch or connect them together with a kill switch.

The wiring diagram that I posted is correct. The switch does NOT feed any voltage to the ignition system. It electrically connects the two black wires together to kill the engine. There is no connection to either wire when the key is in the on position. In fact, if you DO feed a voltage to the ignition system, you will melt a coil or burn up the points.

We are tacking onto a 2007 thread here, just wanted to set the record straight.

Just now beginning to understand how it all works and see now I was mistaken.
I've been tracing my wiring trying to figure it out before I try to fix it.and misunderstood what happens inside the switch.

My Bad... Sorry
