I am trying to replace the lower unit o-rings in a 40 hp OMC Sea King. There is a bushing and O-ring located in the L/U that the shift rod passes through. The manual says to use a tapered punch to remove the bushing that holds the o-ring. Do you know what size tapered punch to use? Do you stick the point of the punch in the bushing hole or try to hit the outer rim of the bushing? I do not want to break anything, but it seems like it will be tough to remove since there is not much room to work.

Thanks,
Nate

If that's the lower unit casing I'm thinking of, the tapered punch idea won't work at all (darn Seloc!). Is this the one where the brass insert is on the inside of the gearcase, so you would have to tap down from the water pump side?

If so, 5/16" threaded rod seems to me to be about the best thing to knock it out. It cuts through the (inevitable) corrosion around the aluminium, and you can use it as a bit of a drill.

Some of those bushings are in there quite hard, and will take considerable heat to help liberate them. Other times the come right out though.

If you mess up the bushing, it's not a big deal. New ones are pretty cheap.

If this is the bushing that comes out from the water pump side, then there's a much easier way.

PS - Post your model number so we can be sure of what you're working on. The nameplate should be between the two transom clamps, up on top of the swivel/steering bracket.

I got a 6" long 5/16" bolt. It worked great! Thanks for the help.

Nate
