Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased a 1960 Evinrude Lightwin 3hp at a yard sale ($35). From what I was told by the seller, it has good compression, but hadn't been run in a bit. I would like to throw this little guy on my 12' Jon Boat for weekend fishing.

Problem is, it was stored outside. there is no visible rust anywhere on the thing (although I haven't looked inside too much, but the outside looks good). I also can't pull the starter cord...it just won't move. I assume a little oil in the cylinders might help.

I don't mind doing a complete overhaul, but would like to avoid it. I just don't want to hurt something by just starting her up.

Anyone know of any problem areas to look for, or any tell-tale trouble signs...may help me to figure out the level of work that I should expect.

At the very least I will replace the impeller...anything else that you would suggest?

Cheers,
Petey

Hi, Petey.

Your most obvious problem is that the manual is missing.

Pull the plugs and squirt some penetrating oil in there. Let her sit (carb down) for a few days while you study your new manual. Then try to turn her over.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the Replies,

I will try that. I have ordered manuals, but they haven't shown up yet...was just trying to get a jumpstart on things. :D
