Sharing my new found motivation for my old boat, that's basically been sitting beside the house for the last few years. I get the itch to go fishing every year about this time, and had contemplated just taking the old Johnson outboard off of the boat, and installing a good trolling motor and be done with it, as the motor had basically kicked my butt out on the open waters more than once. But thanks to googling the engine serial number, I found the Iboats site, which has re-ignited my interest in the old engine. AMAZINGLY simple to work on, now that I have a manual (Thanks Bill), I got the flywheel off, and there, hidden, was ALL of my problems. the right side coil has a large "jaws" sharkbite looking chunk out of it, the bracket that turns the armature was completely separated and dangling (2 countersunk screws fell out, found at Home Depot), brass linkage that actually connects to bracket bent from years of "forcing" accelerator knob forward. Entire armature restricted from hitting stop, due to ignition control wires binding on starter bracket. Went by after work yesterday and bought new coils ($27 a piece), and a "tune-up" kit that has 2 sets of points, and 2 condensers, for another $27. Thread locked the countersunk screws, removed brass arm, placed in vice and re-formed to original shape, re-positioned ignition control wires to allow armature to fully travel smoothly to stop, Everything working sweet now, can't wait to put her in the water on Monday...will be 55 degrees here in the ATL, and Allatoona looks to be about 3/4 full. I'll either be cussin' or cruisin, but will be ready for Lake Weiss, where the real fishing is....
