I'm finding out the hard way that this is a scary monster. None of the shops around my area (Chicago) will touch this thing. I have the original owner's manual and am looking for someone who would be willing to give me a hand with it. It runs OK. Or maybe I should just give up and try to talk the wife into a new motor.

J, nothing wrong with that old stump puller. I fact I'm looking for one for 1965 Glasspar G3 I'm rebuilding. They really are a simple engine to work on and parts are easy to find. http://www.kencook.com/ will have a parts manual that will give you blowups of the engines parts and how they go together. He also has the Service Manuals, but he's not cheap. "Or" you can check Ebay under "outboards" and look for guys selling these old manuals.

In the mean time slide over to www.AOMCI.org. and go to the "ask a member" section. This is the antique outboard club, there's a bunch of guys that play with these old V4's.

The model # is V4SL. 1960 75hp Johnson. I got the motor, boat (1963 Elgin 16-17ft from Sears), and the trailer for $1150.00. I misspoke,I got the service manual from Ken Cook, not the owner's manual. Funny little book. "A clean shop will impress your customers". One of the shops said a common problem is with the timing shaft brackets. They get worn and it becomes difficult to maintain timing. Especially at idle. Thanks for the contacts, I'll give it a try. I promise I'll get it in the water soon.
