Re: 1960 EVINRUDE FASTWIN 18HP WATER PUMP WORKING??? Model 15032
Update!!!! Just took it down to the river to see if the pump was working with it in the water verses my garbage can and as soon I put it into gear, water started coming out. Guess the pump is working.
Putting the motor into gear shouldn't make a difference. The pump is on the drive shaft of the motor, and should be pumping as long as the engine is running.
Water pump kits are far cheaper and easer to replace than blown power heads. The water pump is a maintenance item that should be replaced every few years. Change yours!
The thermostat is needed to keep the engine at the right temperature for good combustion, and proper performance. Install one!
Lower unit oil should be drained, inspected, and replaced every year.
Think about it, if the oil has water in it from a leaking seal, and you live in an area with cold winters, you run the risk of the latent water freezing and splitting the lower unit open. Also, another little known fact; Water rusts steel and iron (the stuff your gears and shafts are made out of in the lower unit). Mind blowing I know, and it's extra double bad if the water happens to contain salt. Final consideration... If you have a gear or bearing that's
starting to let go, seeing some large metal flakes in the oil during routine service may clue you into the issue before catastrophe strikes, and takes out the entire lower unit rather than the couple of parts that are worn out.
It's very simple to change the oil. Remove the slotted plug on the foot that says "Fill". Remove the slotted plug on the bottom that says "Drain", and see what comes out. If there is water, or allot of metallic particles, you have issues. If the oil comes out with no signs of either, get your self some gear lube, fill from the drain plug until the oil trickles out the fill hole. Install the screw for the fill hole with a NEW washer. Install the drain hole screw with a NEW washer. Wipe up, crack a beer, you're done....
BTW the "Top secret file" located at the top of the Johnson/Evinrude forum offers links to a wealth of information otherwise hidden on Iboats. It includes reviving an outboard that has been sitting for a few years. Changing the water pump. Changing the lower unit oil, and a bunch of other useful tidbits. Check it out;
