Is there a way to check this? I had it replaced 4 years ago and it has sat for the last 2 without being started. Just fired it up and ran good, but seemed like lower unit and motor was hotter than I remember. I could just be paranoid!!! Took the cover off to check thermostat and to my surprise there was not one installed!! How hard is it change water pump and/or check to see if it is pumping? Not for sure where water discharges at!! Also is it bad that there is not a thermostat in motor?

Just started motor with thermostat housing off and water is not pumping out of either hole. Guess I need to look at impeller now. How do you check/replace this?

The older motors don't have a "pee hole" like the newer ones. The water comes out with the exhaust in the middle of the leg. If the water isn't coming out there, then I would assume the impeller is bad.

This link will show you how you replace the impeller.

The parts can be ordered here on iboats.

Did you start it in a tub of water? Was the lower unit deep enough in the water? Pump at the top of the lower unit must be submersed for it to work. Not self-priming.

Hi illini. For starters, these old motors can NOT be run on muffs. They have to be run in a test tank with water filled up to about 1"-2" below the main exhaust port on the back of the motor. As mentioned before, these motors don't have a modern "pee stream" of cooling water. Instead, they expel the cooling water mixed with the exhaust gasses. Your motor should also have a thermostat, if it was designed for one. Thankfully, replacing both the impeller and t-star are easy DIY jobs and you can get both parts right here at iboats for about $20 each. If at any time your motor fails to pump water shut it down, or you risk and overheat. Be sure you running at least 24:1 fuel/oil mix and Champion J4C or J6C spark plugs. Here are some great links that can walk you through the jobs.

Re: 1960 EVINRUDE FASTWIN 18HP WATER PUMP WORKING??? Model 15032

Update!!!! Just took it down to the river to see if the pump was working with it in the water verses my garbage can and as soon I put it into gear, water started coming out. Guess the pump is working. I never tested it with the prop moving in the can because it spilled over. The screen for the intake was also clogged a little bit so I am sure cleaning that helped a lot. I am still a little concerned that the lower unit is getting so hot. As soon as water hits it it evaporates. Might have always been that way and never noticed. Need to figure out how to check the lower unit fluids and give it a tune-up and I should have the old girl back in the water. It is running real rich! Thinking about buying an old owners manual. I really appreciate all of the help!!

Hello again illini. Glad the motor is running, but the gearcase should definitely NOT be getting hot, ever. Is it filled with gear oil? Was it shifting into/out of gear properly while on the water? Don't run it again until you've figured out what is wrong, or you could be in for some costly repairs.

Putting the motor into gear shouldn't make a difference. The pump is on the drive shaft of the motor, and should be pumping as long as the engine is running.

Water pump kits are far cheaper and easer to replace than blown power heads. The water pump is a maintenance item that should be replaced every few years. Change yours!

The thermostat is needed to keep the engine at the right temperature for good combustion, and proper performance. Install one!

Lower unit oil should be drained, inspected, and replaced every year.
Think about it, if the oil has water in it from a leaking seal, and you live in an area with cold winters, you run the risk of the latent water freezing and splitting the lower unit open. Also, another little known fact; Water rusts steel and iron (the stuff your gears and shafts are made out of in the lower unit). Mind blowing I know, and it's extra double bad if the water happens to contain salt. Final consideration... If you have a gear or bearing that's starting to let go, seeing some large metal flakes in the oil during routine service may clue you into the issue before catastrophe strikes, and takes out the entire lower unit rather than the couple of parts that are worn out.

It's very simple to change the oil. Remove the slotted plug on the foot that says "Fill". Remove the slotted plug on the bottom that says "Drain", and see what comes out. If there is water, or allot of metallic particles, you have issues. If the oil comes out with no signs of either, get your self some gear lube, fill from the drain plug until the oil trickles out the fill hole. Install the screw for the fill hole with a NEW washer. Install the drain hole screw with a NEW washer. Wipe up, crack a beer, you're done....;)

BTW the "Top secret file" located at the top of the Johnson/Evinrude forum offers links to a wealth of information otherwise hidden on Iboats. It includes reviving an outboard that has been sitting for a few years. Changing the water pump. Changing the lower unit oil, and a bunch of other useful tidbits. Check it out;

Is it possible that being on the water in gear, is allowing the prop to drive some water into the intake, and making it seem like the water pump is working?
