I bought a Texas Maid with what I believe is the original Evinrude motor. It actually runs very well for the most part, but 1 thing I have noticed is oil leaking from the level screw. Doesn't seem to me from what I have read, that this should be happen. So I need suggestions. I want to keep this motor running for as long as possible, so any help is appreciated guys. Thanks!

Not familiar with the term "level screw" but I assume it is the top screw which most motors have labeled as "vent". If this is the case then there should be a plastic gasket under the head of the screw. When the screw is tightened the gasket should stop any oil from leaking out.

great! thanks, related question though, does this mean I need to change lower unit lube because water may have gotten in? I am on a Freshwater lake.

I don't know the preventive maintenance schedule on a lower unit but I would when in doubt, those those things are a fortune to fix and a bottle of gear case lube is a few bucks and to make sure its topped off to proper level after leaking wouldn't hurt.

anybody know how much gear oil for the 1960 starflite? And if it is okay to use just the type of lower unit oil they sell at academy, or do you need special oil for the old buggers?

If the motor is mechanical shift, use any marine gear oil for mechanical shift motors. It will take more than a qt.

if electric shift, use Type C marine gear lube.

The automotive stuff is probably fine, however, the marine gear lube is probably a bit better, and quite available.

Re: 1960 75hp Evinrude Lower Unit

Thank you guys. I bought two quarts, so I am hoping that will be good. The oil that I thought was coming from the level screw is actually coming from a small hole to the right of it, it is some sort of weep hole it looks like. Is it normal for oil to come out from there? Sorry for all the questions, new to this, and just hoping to make my $600 go a long way, or at least long enough so that my wife doesn't get really pissed at me!

unburnt oil and gas will exit those weep holes so no problem as long as it's that
