Will the spark jump a 1/4" air gap and is it bright blue?
Will it contine to run if you squirt fuel into the carb?
Did you get the static setting on the needle valves set correctly, low speed 1 1/4 turn out from lightly seated and high speed 3/4 turn out from lightly seated?

Re: 1960 75 h.p evinrude wont start

I am very new to all of this outboard stuff but I have read several times (including my manual) to NOT use auto ignition parts or you may hurt something else...I think my original manual even says that.

But again I am new to this and maybe it's o.k.

On another note...I was stuck with mine not running and thought I had shorted out the power pack. Found out it was old wires that were in bad shape under their plastic insulation. Soon as I replaced a single wire it fired right up.

Good luck.

Maybe the condenser is bad? Maybe the wires under the distributor pully are shorting to ground? Maybe the ign is shorted to ground thru the key?

Re: 1960 75 h.p evinrude wont start

it was just the timing .it was off just a little not a lot but enough to not make it want to start never realized how temperamental these motors can be but I've got the timing set right and the new coil put in an it fires off right when I start it I have no more problems with it it runs great thank you
