So i got this engine for 40$ from someone who knew nothing about it, frankly neither do i but its worth a shot. So far ive clean it, did the carb (not the jets), engine compression at around 120 and it has spark. Ive read the other threads about the engine but none with my problem.

I set it up in a large pale of water and me and a couple friends had a bottle of gas hooked by a fuel line to the carb because the engine did not come with the gas tank and fuel line. (it doesnt have a built in fuel tank, i have to find one with the correct fitting). After pulling the engine for a long time in neutral with the choke on throttle in start position it would not start. I than put the gear into forward full throttle with it wide open and after about 10 pulls it started and ran for about under 5 seconds. This happened about 6 times till i couldn't pull anymore. The engine just wont start in neutral and i don't know why.

If anyone can offer their help with this i would greatly appreciate it. Also im not positive its 60's but my friend looked at the serial plate and said it was. It has the tecumseh head on it.

Photos of one that is the same as mine:

That is the orange tube in the carb? when i cleaned the carb i took that out and cleaned it too, i didn't see any damage just from looking at it. Will i be looking for a leak in it or? Also would this cause the problem im having?

Thanks

It splits along the long edge most of the time, you can carefully put a little pressure on it with your mouth....it will either hold air or leak along that edge.

Ok i will go have a look in the shop, i hate taking this carb off though, its possibly one of the toughest ive ever had to take off. Also i was looking through the forum and saw the the element has to be at 8 and 2 so i will make sure it is at that position after i check for leaks.

I found this thread he has a similar problem as me but my engine will only start on full throttle ^_^

Yeah the timing synced to the carb can be tricky and many Eska problem begin when the carb came off. You want the ignition timing to move before the throttle butterfly opens and make a smooth transition without binding, you need to follow the manual closely on that and its a flywheel off job

I just went to the shop and found out the model #: 217-5949-1 so it is not the exact one in the pictures but close to it.

I have that exact same model hanging in the shop, BEWARE! of Breaking or broken water tube at the cooling base and leaky shift seals. Lower units are easy to reseal and I have a cheap solution for the leaking shift rod seal if you live near a OMC/BRP dealer.
