I have the above mentioned motor I want to restore. This model has a cable mount opening in the pan for what appears to be remote start, choke, kill switch and maybe more, it has 5 or 6 pins sticking out. I looked the part up and its 377278 cable assembly. I tried looking around at my usual places for parts and cant find anything. Does anyone have a clue where to find one? ( Im looking to incorporate the controls onto a tiller but still be able to hook up for a remote ) Ronnie

Ronnie, You might contact Trixie's landing in Bayville NJ. They have a website. They had all those old Johnnyrude motors and parts for years. The old guy (Trixie) died some years ago, but the son-in-law (Bob) runs the place.

Unfortunately, most of the original cables are rotted and of no use.

There is a guy up here in Canada from my local antique motor club that had a bunch made up. They are not cheap, but are nice.

Holy mother of pearl, they are costly. I disassembled the motor today and of coarse found I have a few other fish to fry here, both coils trashed, all the rubber is dry rot, LU is frozen, Im sure its a ball of rust. and someone wrote on the side of each cylindar the # 120 / 105. Im assuming thats comp. and I dont really like those numbers. I think Im gonna do a comp. test for myself and if those #s run true it may be just a parts motor. I found another one on craigslist for $150.00 but its a 300 mile run. I really like the looks of this motor and I want to hear for myself how quiet " Super Quit " is. Thank you both for the info

I've always thought that you wanted your highest cylindar within 10% of your lowest, these #'s indicate around 14%, not insanely off but most of the motors i have are within 5%. What is your thought on that?

I think it is a great starting point! Maybe will not even require new piston rings and will improve after decarbonization with Seafoam. My RDS-21 was seized when I got it and the PO said "it just quit in the middle of the lake". Because of the unknowns, I completely tore it down, honed the cylinders and re-ringed the original pistons. Had to replace connecting rod bearings and polish the crank journals as that was the only thing I found wrong. It started and ran on the first crank after reassembly. Took me three rebuilds to get the carb right because there was so much crud in it. That motor was a great runner. Good luck with yours!

I'm getting one of these motors today myself. $40 from a neighbor. I will have to go all through it and give the royal work over, but it looks like it's low hours and the paint looks decent and mine even has a factory generator on it, too.:D

As far as your compression goes, you want to make sure the compression releases are closing properly and are working properly, or you'll get false readings. Spray the heck out of those little valves with WD-40 and get them opening and closing good before you try your compression again.

I'll post some pics of it, when I get it. It mounts on the port side, just opposite of the starter. It's about the same size and there's a drive belt, that goes from the top of the flywheel to it.

Yea, these were great motors and they sold them by the train loads. You shouldn't have problems finding parts for them.

I think if you look around at these sites, you'll likely find a good used one, for a whole lot cheaper.

laingsoutboards.com
tcoutboard.com

I got my old 59 Super Sea Hoss 35 last night. Me and my neighbor brought it down last night and hung it on the edge of my test barrel. I'm going to tinker with it tomorrow and see if I can get it to start. It's dead on one spark plug lead, so I need to check the ignition sytem. Good sturdy old motors. I think you'll enjoy yours. :D

Hi!
I have a 35 seahorse also. Haven't as yet tried to start it, but it looks really clean. I am working on a little 6 hp evinrude right now and will get to my 35 next. I found a gentleman that bought a boatload of old Johnson and evinrude parts. I needed the wire harness and controls for my 1959. He had brand new ones and sold them to me very reasonable. He said if I need anything else just call him. Give him a try his name is Ed Samuelson. Phone # is 1-651-437-6310. GOOD LUCK John

Ouch, be careful jwh. You not only hijacked a thread, but you also advertised. double whammy. :D:D

Hopefully the moderators won't take you to the woodshed over this one. :D

You might post a new thread and go from there bud. Good luck.

Go to the "Top Secret" thread and read the awakening of an outboard link and read up on it.
