Father had this 1959 Kiekhaefer Mercury 6hp since it was new. Used once a year for 2 day fishing trip. We ran out out of gas and stored in house till following year. Always fired right up. My dad gave me the motor where it now has sat for past 21 years in my damp basement garage till last week when I tried to fire it up. Removed plugs cleaned and tested them they are good. Cylinders get gas but there is no spark. The way I test plugs is to remove the plug from the cylinder and hold plug to the metal cylinder head with the plug wire is attached. I attempted to turn the fly wheel "by hand" looking for a spark in the plug, there is no spark with either cylinder ( it is very hard to turn the flywheel fast by hand, since the pull start is in the cowing cover that has to be removed to get at the cylinders). But I am 99% confident that there is no juice to fire the plug. Any assistance or advice of how to diagnose, test, fix this problem. Or what obviously could be the problem from this motor sitting in my damp garage for past 21 years. Last time this motor was used 21 years ago I personally ran it out of gas and worked perfect then.

Do a compression test if that is good pull the flywheel if you have the original coils they will more than likely need to be replaced. While you are in there maybe throw some points and condensors in. You should also give the carb a good cleaning

Thanks Much ! Where do i get a flywheel Puller for such a old motor? I think that will be half of the battle. Should have figured it had points and condenser. Probably corroded points.

Any puller that uses the three bolts can pull the flywheel do not use the gear puller with the 3 arms. I definitely recommend replacing the coils as they are way past there service life.

Those coils do not need to automatically be replaced and they might be spendy.---Just did a 1963 model 6 hp , cleaned both point sets and had wonderful spark again.

RACERONE:. Yes you were correct! Just filed both set of points and runs like a dream. The wires connected to the coil did look bare where they attached to the coil so they do look like they will eventually need replacing.
