1959 Johnson 35 HP Grease zerk

I'm bringing a '59 35 HP back to life. Rebuilt the carb and put in new points. Roared to life with two or three cranks of the starter.

I noticed a grease zerk on the port side of the power head in the middle lower. Does this go to the lower main bearing? If not, where to? I pulled the lower unit and noticed a lot of brown grease instead of the white moly lube on the top of the drive shaft splines. Does that grease fitting feed the grease there?

Thanks.

marineengine.com has diagrams of your motor..year, hp., model..are you possibly mistaking a nipple for an oil hose for a grease fitting?..

It's a grease fitting for sure. I'm just wondering for what, since there are no moving parts near it.

I believe you are talking about the one for the shifter shaft that goes across, below the powerhead, out of sight.

One thing for dang sure it is not for the main bearing or the splines.

Thank you for the replies. I checked the parts diagram and it does look like the shift shaft lever goes from one side of the lower unit to the other. Now I know what I'm adding grease to.
