I rebuilt my carb this past spring and have been living with loose carb needles ever since. Can I buy and install the packing washers without removing the carb again? Does anyone know how many should be in each needle (high and low speed)?

Thanks for the help! Been a great summer.

A couple of washers on each needle. The gland nut should hold the needle in place, though (goes over the needle, and screws into the carb body).

The needles are staying attached to the carb just fine, so I think the gland nut is ok. They just won?t keep their positions when the motor is running. I?ve had to re-adjust the needles when the motor starts due to the vibrations.

That's the function of the gland nut, though, It should be tight enough to keep the needles from losing their settings, but not so tight that you can't make adjustments.

Ok I just went and tightened both gland nuts on high and low speed needles. It tightened up just a little bit, but the needles are still pretty loose. Should I try packing them again with washers or just go ahead and get gland nuts to replace them both as well?

Add packing washers (no need to remove carb to do it). If you have a local shop, get supply of them for this and future use (Use the pn Joe Reeves supplied above, or take the needles in to a shop and get a fit.)

Strikes me you may not have the needles fully seated (although don't want to over tighten, particularly the l.s. needle with the sharp point.) I always suggest that you dry fit that needle with the domed fitting removed -- allows you to see and feel the fit when it's fully closed.

With the carb assembled and installed, seating the needles is a matter of feel. Take them out all the way and check for old packing washers. The '59 also has a needle valve bushing -- might check to be sure that's in place (think it should come out with the needle.)
