I've never started it.

New: coils, condensers, points, spark plug wires,
plugs, impeller, seals

I've been reading iboats and looking at videos on youtube
about timing old Evinrudes. I really appreciate all the
expertise you share here. But I am dazed and confused.
The timing seems to be way off. Could you please tell me
if you see anything wrong in these pics? The top piston
is clost to TDC. The timing marks look like approx 30? ATDS.
The armature rotates around and I can't find any info on
whether this is bad or not. So I have the remote throttle connected and
screwed in so the armature is at the end of it's travel.
I just don't know how it's supposed to be. My son is coming up from
Nevada (to Oregon) at the end of the week to get this boat for his birthday.
Thanks in advance for your help. Jeff

re. magneto assembly -- need condensers. need flat brass clips holding springs in place (points). Condenser and second coil wire go to points. Not sure what the brown wire is -- presumably cut out switch? All wires need to be tucked down so as not to contact spinning flywheel.

Timing will be correct if points are set (.020) when the rub arm hits the high point on the cam lobe. Set one, then set the flywheel on over the key and rotate it 180 degrees clockwise; remove flywheel and set second set of points.

Here's an assembled magneto: http://www.leeroysramblings.com/johnson_magneto.htm

Do you have a timing fixture? There are some good videos on youtube with timing fixture or with using the flywheel. I set mine using a feeler gauge. As far as I know there is no need to worry about TDC and WOT.

So, I see you have been reading up on setting the points while using the flywheel as a timing fixture (that explains the brown wire). That is ok, but can be confusing and error prone. I suggest you just set the gaps at 0.020" at the high point on the cam and let it go at that. If you want to get them perfect and want a real timing fixture see www.richardsoutboardtools.com

Hi F_R, I have communicated with Richard about the tools and decided to see how it runs first. It starts and runs smooth but somethings causing it to flood and when it quits gas comes out of the carb throat. I have to get a carb kit quick so it's running when my son gets here this weekend. any suggestions on a source close to oregon?

You are standing in the iboats store. The mail goes anywhere in the U.S. overnight if you are desperate. Regular Flat Rate Priority is usually 2 days, 3 to the boonies.
