It had been 5 years since this motor ran. The motor was laying on its side for about a month or two. I put new mixed gas in it. I have it in a barrel full of water and as it is running it is depositing enough oily film in the water that I am reluctant to take it out. I put new plugs in it thinking that it wasn't getting a hot enough spark. I also tried messing around with the carb adjustments too.. the high and low idle rich and lean adjustments. That didn't change either as far as I could tell. I think it is the exhaust where the oil is coming from. Can anyone help me?? I don't have a repair or maintenance manual.

HI sgt. Welcome to iboats. The oily water you se in the test tank is perfectly normal and will go away once you're on the open water. It happens because there are exhaust gases expelled beneath the water's surface as well as being mixed with the cooling water. When placed in a confined area like the tank it becomes quite noticeable. You could of course be running on only one cylinder which would cause excess unburnt fuel to be deposited in the water, but we'll assume you're firing on both of them for now. Here are some vids of motors like yours running in a test tank to give you an idea of what to expect. Be sure you're running 24:1 mix along with champion J6C plugs.
