I recently rebuilt the magneto and i would like to know if there is a easy way to set the timing and check the condensers for contuity any help will be appreciated
Thank You
Accurate setting of the points is what sets the timing on that engine. There are tools the dealers use to set when the points open but you can also set them with a feeler gauge. Place rubbing block on high point of cam and set to 0.020". Condensers rarely go bad but most are changed when the points are replaced.
Well I wouldnt say that they rarely go bad. They fail more than you think. The points get pitted and you lose spark either permanently or sporatically, and guys blame the points, or motor, or whatever, but in fact the condensor failed.
I had a bag of about 50 from the last few motors I restored. Half failed on the Mercotronic leakage test. You can test for shorts or opens with a more standard meter.
Thanks guys the points were off major which was keeping it from running. It fired right up with the electric start and no choke after sitting for 2 years in the barn. Thank everyone for the help
