My 1959 18 hp Evinrude tiller rotates left and right way too easy. I am wondering if the is a friction adjustment. If I release the throttle handle momentarily the motor will pivot left or right in a heart beat. Not good for trolling. Would like to tighten this movement up some.

TIA

A lot of those old Johnnys did have friction adjustments for steering. Maybe someone who knows where they are willl chime in.

Look between the transom clamps and just over the boat transom. You'll see a bolt (flat blade screwdriver). That's the steering friction adjustment.

Thanks kbait: that is right where it was, albeit very rusted and needed sometime to soak up the penetrating oil I got it lose. Replaced the screw with a 7/16th bolt after dressing the threads and made a perfect adjustment to my likings. Now to overhaul the lower unit.

This forum is such a great place with very knowledgeable folks willing to give of themselves . Thanks to everyone.
