I am trying to resurrect my 1959 18 hp Evinrude. In doing so my first problem became apparent as soon as I tried to turn it over with the pull rope. Nothing, so off came the puller starter mechanism and I have determined the white plastic engaging dog is not engaging. I don't see a spring mechanism to extend the dog so it will engage with the flywheel. I'm probably missing something here in the ole' knowledge bank! I have cleaned both the dog pivot shaft and notched washer that the spring wire lies in it track. Just can't see what returns the dog to the engage position.

This is what I have. Can anyone see something amiss or enlighten me to how this pull starter works?

I have found the answer to the pull starter dilemma. I had to finally drive out to the only boat yard for miles and ask. Mic was his usual self, gruff but pleasant. He took one look at the pull starter and said these don't have return springs, they work off friction. The center screw wasn't tight enough to keep the center bushing from turning. If the center bushing turns there won't be any friction on the little horseshoe spring to move the engagement nylon dog to the start position. This may all sound too simple but for past experience, simple may not always be so! Cleaned out the buildup of gunk in the groove the bushing ran in, tighten up the center bolt nice and snug and the starter works like a champ.

Hello,

Newbie here...I wanted to find out a bit more about the 1959 Evinrude you restored (by the way, it looks and sounds great!). I too have an Evinrude 15028-10188...it says Fastwin on the cover...is that the same engine as yours?

Welcome to iboats htgrim. This is an old thread, better to start your own and we can help you out. Gets confusing when you ask questions in others threads.

Your motor is a 1959 18hp Fastwin.
