I picked up this little 1959 10 hp Johnson outboard to rebuild and keep me out of trouble this winter and it left me with a few questions that are better answered before I do things the wrong way.
In the Seloc manual ( yes I know,it is not a factory manual)it states that it produces 10 hp at WOT, WOT is 4000 rpm. Then, when I look at the 1960 10 horse power, which is the very same 16.6 cubic inch block,it produces 10hp at WOT,which is 4500 rpm.
What gives?
Another question.
Does this engines have needle bearings already?or are we still stuck with the old fashioned bushings that need a ton of oil to run smooth?
Last question.
Which is the better engine,the 1959 10horse or the 1964 9.5?
Thanks for your thoughts, advice and opinions.

Re: 1959 10 hp Johnson.

Don't know about the RPM. It isn't a big deal anyway. It's a 10hp motor.

It has needle bearings. But that is not the whole story. Those motors are rough on the wrist pins. They would beat loose in the pistons. They fixed the problem in '61 with larger w/pins. I suggest you don't skimp on the oil. Use 24:1

"Best"? The 10hp. The 9.5s weren't bad, but are very complicated if you need to do major surgery on them. Besides, the '64 was a first-year motor and didn't idle very well because of excessive vibration. My personal pick of the 9-10hp range of motors was the '61-63 Evinrude 10, because of the wrist pins and Evinrude over Johnson because it has a better, tighter fitting, less rattleing, hood

EDIT: Come to think of it, I believe the '59 has bushings at the wrist pin end of the rod, in addition to the piston problem. But don't let that scare you, if it isn't already beat to death and you don't abuse it, it will last a long time.
