1958 to 1968 V4 Special Tools

I have the 1965 Johnson Outboard Service Manual, P/N 312468. I believe it's a 1990s reprint from Helm, Inc. The manual says that Special Tools are listed in Section 15, but the book stops at Section 14. My engine is a 75HP electric shift.

Here's the last page of Section 14.

Looks like there's a puller for the lower unit gearcase head assembly with reference to Section 15, Special Tools, which of course is not included in my copy of the manual. This tool would be needed, for example, of one were to need to replace the shaft seal. No special tools are mentioned for the removing/installing the shaft seal itself.

In terms of the shaft seal on the impeller housing, I watched a fellow on YouTube working a '65 75HP electric shift, and he used what he said was a Johnson seal removal / installation tool (looked like a cylinder with stepped diameters) but again, it's not mentioned in the manual.

Wondering if anyone has info about useful special tools like these. I have other pullers that may work, and I also have access to my son-in-law's arbor press, but I don't know if he has the right mandrels for pressing these seals.

Try the www.everythingoutboards.com site. You can search on required OEM tools by year and horsepower. Once you have the part number and you are convinced you need the tool, a google or eBay search will give you used and new purchase options.
It is important to note that many of the tools can be replaced with standard tools (i.e. bearing pullers) of an appropriate size. Also, I proactively purchased the gearcase pull hooks for my 1986 Johnson 150, only to find that once I removed the four mounting screws the gearcase pulled out easily with my fingers. This surprised me given the motor was 34 years old and I owned it for 20 years prior to removing the gearcase and replacing seals. May you have the same luck.

Excellent tips, thank you! You’re right, maybe it will come right out! It’s just an O-ring and maybe it’s not even very tight anymore. Appreciate your insights.
