Re: 1958 sportwin throttle problem

Coils are installed improperly, see the following...........

(Magneto & Driver Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creats friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.

Re: 1958 sportwin throttle problem

thanks JR,
coils are now properly alingned, no more wild kick back of the throttle. new problem is throttle wont advance at all. i took of the flywheel again and have found that if i loosen the large armature retaining screw(the one that goes through the coil) the throttle frees up nicely. if i retighten them past finger tight the the throttle wont advance. i have the armature plate retaining ring flat side up. my original manual kinda sorta indicates the bevel side up. could i have the ring upside down?
thanks in advance
phil

No, the ring should be flat side up.

The problem is that the screw is slightly too long. Either the screw has been replaced at one time OR the coil has been replaced with one that has shorter metal laminations (top to bottom portion of metal is not as high).

Remove the screw and file it off slightly to make it a little shorter.

JR,
brand new coils (sierra). just found another similar thread (funny stuff with armature plate by geekomatic) that you advised grease on the brass support and alum ring. will follow your advise step by step tomorrow. grease first then shorten the screw. i feel like im close. thanks man.

Yes - as long as the crew head doesn't come up above the coil itself you'll be fine...

Compare that "lockup" screw with the other one...... curious as to the difference.

Actually "normal" blue smoke and running, it is a 58 after all, it will be better on the water.
