1958 Mercury Mark 28

Hi I have a 1958 Mark 28 and just got it started and within a couple minutes the motor is so hot you can't even touch it. Is this normal. Any help would be appreciated

You have to replace the impeller as step 1 of resurrection of any outboard.

So service the raw water pump

Not easy to replace the impeller on those.----Grey haired mechanic might be needed.-----Yes it needs a new impeller !

If that is a 28A you HAVE to buy the manual to change the impeller. Also special tools needed. This site has everything you need.
