I am new to outboard motors and just recently bought a 58 Johnson 18hp with controls. i want to make it tiller controlled and was wondering what year and models of tiller handles are compatible with my 18 hp motor.
Re: 1958 Johnson 18hp Seahorse conversion from conrtols to tiller
Hi NickMack. Welcome to iboats. Great motor you got there. One of the all time greats, and the reverse two tone paint jobs are awesome. If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to use tillers from a wide variety of FD model years as they remained relatively unchanged for years. You may need to paint it to match, but the parts themselves should be readily available. Check ebay, aomci.org and the folks here for the parts. Here are some links to a set of exploded diagrams and complete part list for your motor and an article on how to do the conversion itself. It's real simple. They should help your cross reference the various part numbers. Be sure you hold on to all of the old hardware for the controls too. Not only are they handy, but they can be worth a few bucks too. Keep us posted. We love pics.
