1958 35hp sea horse water pump question

Is there suppose to be some type of rubber basket around bottom of the impeller housing. When i tour into mine ther wasn't just wondering if i should put some form-a-gasket around it when i reinstall it or not?

No, and no.

But do remove the stainless steel plate and clean under it. Then put some sealer under the plate, where it sits on the gearcase housing.
